Why Online Gambling Should be Legal
Why Online Gambling Should be Legal
by Mathew Farfell
Many people believe have a negative view of online gambling. They believe that only someone with a gambling problem would need to have access to a casino 24 hours a day, and that by banning online casinos the government has stopped problem gamblers from gambling.
The facts tell a different story. The facts are that most people who use online casinos spend less then 20 hours a month or 5 hours a week gambling. Surveys have shown that most people who gamble in an online casino just don’t have the time to get away to a casino.
These people are not the dregs of society as some people would have you believe. They are people who have children and full time jobs and don’t have the time to go drive or fly to a casino, but still enjoy playing poker or some other casino game to relax. Some of these people just like to come home after a 12 hour day of work and like to unwind by logging into an online casino to play some poker. its not all about the money its just fun.
Other surveys have shown that most people with gambling problems prefer to actually go to the casino. Their addictions feed on the rush of the bells and lights from the machines as well as the excitement from the other gamblers that you do not get from an online casino.
Banning online gambling will not stop those who really want to gamble. An addict will go to any means to get his fix. Someone addicted to gambling is going to be gambling all the time wherever they can. They will be betting on sports with underground bookies, playing poker in back room poker games, and will still have plenty of time to get to the land based casinos.
At the same time the ban on internet gambling and online casinos is not working anyway and in the end could destroy our financial institutions. The government has made it the banks responsibility to police all money transfers to make sure they are not going to or from online casinos. The banks and other financial institutions are not designed to do this, and in the end it will cost them millions of dollars do put something in place that will not work and everyone knows it.
And despite the government’s attempts to spread the rumors that online gambling could be going to fund international terrorism, there is no proof of this and not one charge has ever been made. Currently Americans can still access online casinos even though technically they have been banned ever since 2006 in the USA.
But with the use of third party money transfer companies on the internet it is impossible for the banks to know where the money is going and where it came from. This is what everyone knows and can do nothing to stop it. In effect this stops the banks ability to stop the transfer of money for the reason of gambling.
Martha Werbathy loves betting on sports and is a full time activist to reverse the online casino ban.
